Smart devices pack powerful punch (from Austrilian IT News)
A FIRST-TIME smart phone or PDA owner spends the early weeks in a honeymoon of bursting expectations. As the advertising proclaims, that shiny little device is a powerful computer capable of running many more applications than a simple email program, calendar and to-do list. Developers for each of the three main operating systems, Palm, Symbian and Microsoft's Windows for Mobile Phone 2003 have produced thousands of programs that can squeeze an extra gram of usefulness out of any mobile device. Access to email always tops the most-popular list, along with other productivity tools under the category of personal information manager. PDAs are purpose-built to simplify chores in a hectic life and there is a vast number of ways to remember an appointment or synchronise with another device. Mobile Action's handset manager does all this and adds a ringtone composer and an audio-file player, downloading and backing up data from a smart phone to a PC over Bluetooth, infrared or USB. Content is not restricted to mainstream media. The program pulls updates from family and special interest sites. ...... Other applications aim to mimic the operation of desktop PCs.
